The D2 Class is a class of 4-4-2 Passenger locomotives designed by Howard Knott at the Eastern & Atlantic's Trenton works.
In the 1910's, the E&A required a new passenger locomotive to replace it's aging fleet of 4-4-0's built in the late 19th century. Thus, Howard Knott decided upon a 4-4-2 wheel arrangement as it allowed a larger firebox than the 4-4-0's currently in service.
The D2 Class was put into production in 1913, and 95 of these locomotives were produced between 1913 and 1916. The locomotives were intended for slow and express passenger service, but in the end they only were used in slower passenger service.
